The World Health Organization (WHO) wants Romania to solve its health crisis and boost the anti-COVID vaccination campaign, Dr. Alexandru Rafila, Romania’s WHO representative, told G4Media on Sunday.
WHO representatives will have a videoconference call on Monday with the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) leadership. They will discuss how WHO can help Romania overcome the crisis that has brought the health system close to collapse, but also how to boost the vaccination campaign.
Romania is currently one of the countries most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the rapidly rising number of deaths and infections, the government has refused to quarantine the capital and Ilfov county, the areas most affected by the pandemic. Dr. Rafila said that the opinion of the INSP experts who requested the establishment of a lockdown should be heard: “I believe that in this situation we must listen and not discredit the experts from INSP”, he told Antena 3.
Neighbouring Moldova and several EU states have offered support to help Romania overcome the COVID-19 crisis.
Last week Romania registered 2062 deaths caused by the coronavirus.
