Former prime minister Viorica Dăncilă announced on Tuesday that she has left the PSD after 26 years and joined a new party (NOI), Euractiv reported. Romania’s first female prime minister follows in the footsteps of her political “mentor”, Liviu Dragnea, who, after serving a prison term for corruption, also left the PSD.
Meanwhile former PM, Senate Speaker and PNL president Florin Cîțu is fighting for his political life. More than 40 county (out 41) party leaders have signed a statement requesting the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) to step down, G4media reported. Unless Cîțu resigns, the regional leaders seek to summon the party’s leading body, the National Council, on Sunday, April 3. The procedure for organising a special congress will begin on April 10, at which a new president could be elected, reports Digi24.
