Romania recorded a total production of 11.44 million tons of wheat this year, the largest harvest recorded since the country’s accession to the European Union in 2007, reported Libertatea.
Wheat production increased by 5.03 million tonnes compared to 2020, when there was a drought, and by 1.14 million tonnes compared to 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
For this year farmers worry about rising prices for fertilisers and diesel. Laurențiu Baciu, farmer and former president of the League of Agricultural Producers Associations in Romania, does not believe that 2021 is a good year for agriculture. “[The cost of fertiliser] was RON 1.2 per kilogram and now it is RON 4”, he told Libertatea. “We started the spring campaign with diesel at 4 lei per liter, now it is 6 lei per liter. Seeds and pesticides became more expensive. Price increases for agricultural producers were an illusion.”
