Romania’s top player Simona Halep was beaten today in the final of the Transylvania Open. Anett Kontaveit showed her excellent form and and won against the home favourite 6-2, 6-3 in the inaugural edition of the tournament in Cluj-Napoca.
Simona Halep did not have the level of the previous matches in the final, reported Agerpres. The Romanian struggled to counter the aggression and force shown by Kontaveit. Halep (30 years old, 18 WTA) played her first final this year.
It was Kontaveit’s fourth title of 2021 and with today’s win she secured her place in the end-of-year WTA Finals for the first time. The Estonian will make her debut in the WTA Top Ten on Monday.
On August 17th, Anett Kontaveit was on a 5-match losing streak after losing to Ons Jabeur in 1R Cincinnati.
Since August 17th: Went 26-2, 4 titles, and will surge from No.30 to No.8 on the Porsche Race to the WTA Finals.
