A decision by the Bucharest Court of Appeal in the Collective club case is expected any day now. Former mayor of Bucharest’s district 4 Cristian Popescu Piedone — now mayor of district 5 — was sentenced by the Bucharest Tribunal to eight years and six months in prison because of abuse of office in connection with the issuance of operating permits for the Collective nightclub.

Along with Popescu Piedone, the three owners of the club and the two firefighters, responsible for checking the club’s permits, were also convicted. All the defendants pleaded not guilty and appealed. The owner of the company that installed the fireworks in the club died in August.

Tomorrow, October 30, there will be a moment in memory of the victims in front of the Palace of Justice at 6 pm, reported DoR.
